One of the first things anyone should learn for their own self protection is how to punch and strike with power.  Having the ability to end a fight quickly with potentially one strike is a huge advantage.

Depending on the situation at hand, there are two basic ways to generate more power in your punches.  The first is to use the ground and your hips, and the second is to drop your weight into the punch.

Using the ground and your hips is the best way to generate power when you are in close to your opponent.  If you have room to take a step, then you have more opportunity to drop your weight into the punch with the drop step.
